Maps and Data (MaD) Browser
The MaD browser provides dynamic map access through standard Internet browsers with no plug-ins or software installation required.
Need/Opportunity
- Provide remote access to maps and spatial databases;
- Provide dynamic map display and update capabilities
Environmental projects often employ maps along with data that have a spatial component. Easy access to these maps and data becomes a challenge when stakeholders and participants are geographically removed from a site or project. Powerful map display and update capabilities are necessary for spatial data management and typically require specialized software that most users do not have. EVS's Map and Data (MaD) browser was developed specifically to meet these challenges.
Approach
- Internet-based map and data browser
- Utilizes standard Web browser; no plug-in required
- Map data uploading and downloading
- Easy translation of standard map data formats
The MaD browser is a low-cost, readily customizable solution to providing Geographical Information System (GIS) capabilities over the Web. It requires no plug-ins or software installation, yet provides sophisticated map and data display and upload/download capabilities. The MaD browser works across a variety of web browsers and hardware platforms but places minimal loads on web servers. File converters allow easy translation of standard GIS map file formats into MaD-compatible files. The MaD browser is compatible with most commercial database systems.
Results
- Used for spatial data applications
- Available for commercialization
EVS's MaD browser has been used for a variety of projects including support of characterization and remediation activities at Department of Defense sites, battlefield monitoring programs, and emergency response systems. The MaD code is available for commercialization.
Benefits
- Low cost solutions to serving maps over the Web
- Customizable capabilities
- Enhanced project participation
The MaD browser provides Web-based access to mapping and GIS data without investing in costly GIS systems. Cross-platform compatibility ensures that mapping data are readily available to users wherever they are, regardless of their computer hardware and software capabilities. The code is readily customizable for project-specific needs. The MaD Browser's ease of use and powerful capabilities facilitate participation in environmental projects.
