Ecological Risk Assessment
Ecological risk assessments (ERAs) are conducted to evaluate the likelihood that adverse ecological effects could result from the exposure to one or more chemical and/or radiological contaminants in the environment. ERAs also provide needed information to adequately develop and evaluate remedial alternatives that best balance human health and ecological concerns while being protective of the environment and are cost-effective. EVS provides support to the Department of Energy (DOE), the Department of Defense (DOD), and other Federal agencies in all aspects of ERA, including the design and conduct of site-specific ERAs, technical reviews, policy and guidance development, and training. Specific expertise that EVS brings to this support includes ecotoxicology, aquatic and terrestrial ecology, plant ecology and taxonomy, animal behavior, and physiological ecology. In addition, EVS employs a variety of tools and approaches for conducting ERAs, including food web dose modeling, GIS and remote sensing applications, habitat evaluation procedures, and a variety of standard plant and animal census techniques.
