Hazardous Material Transport Risk
The safety of radioactive material transportation is a major public concern. These concerns have focused lately on the commitment made by the Department of Energy (DOE) to clean up its sites and to safely dispose of its legacy and future radioactive wastes. Current shipments of waste include transuranic waste destined for final disposal at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant. Future shipments of spent nuclear fuel and other high level waste to either a temporary storage site or a final repository are under consideration. In all cases, the Department of Energy is committed to ensuring that all current and future radioactive material shipments are conducted in a manner that reduces risks to public health and the environment. The Argonne Environmental Science Division (EVS) has a strong Transportation Risk Assessment Program in support of DOE objectives to move radioactive materials efficiently and safely. Over the past ten years, EVS has been involved in the preparation and analysis of major transportation risk assessments for all radioactive waste types. EVS is an active participant in DOE's Transportation Risk Assessment Working Group and was instrumental in helping to define a comprehensive transportation risk methodology for use in environmental analyses such as those conducted for environmental impact statements.
