Site Cleanup

The Environmental Science Division (EVS) has supported federal agencies in the cleanup of their facilities and installations for many years. In the 1980's, Argonne assisted the Department of Energy (DOE) with the "environmental surveys" of its major weapons production facilities and developed and implemented environmental assessments for U.S. Army installations included in the first round of base closure and realignment. From these initial preliminary investigations through to remedial actions, Argonne's specific technical skills have been applied to create innovative solutions that reduce the costs and risks associated with cleanup.

EVS has had experience providing technical assistance for cleanup activities at various DOE sites, including at:

  • Hanford Reservation
  • Brookhaven National Laboratory
  • Weldon Spring Site Remedial Action Project
  • Fernald Environmental Management Project
  • Oak Ridge Reservation
  • Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program

Cleanup activities at Department of Defense and other agency sites includes those at:

  • Army ammunition plants (e.g., Twin Cities)
  • Proving grounds (e.g., Yuma, Aberdeen J-Field)
  • Kirtland Air Force Base
  • Navy operations (ecological risk assessment)
  • Antarctic (National Science Foundation)

While having broad cleanup expertise and experience, EVS's assistance to federal agencies is often focused on providing specialized technical approaches that are integrated with the services of engineering contractors. EVS is experienced at such integration and works seamlessly with other professionals to incorporate its skills in cleanup strategies, radiological and military contaminants, risk assessment, sampling and analysis programs (ASAPs), environmental data management and decision supports, modeling, and innovative remediation technology deployment. EVS experience has been that its role on such teams has helped the federal agency to be an improved consumer of the services of its cleanup contractors.
