Integrated Modeling and Simulation
Modeling and simulation tool development and application are core capabilities in Argonne's Environmental Science Division (EVS). These tools involve state-of-the-art environmental databases, analyses, and visualization techniques. These capabilities are being enhanced with innovative ways of using geographical information systems (GISs) and Internet technologies for simplifying electronic data management and communication.
The wide range of modeling and simulation applications that can be integrated to produce tools tailored to specific needs can include, for example, those dealing with:
- Fate and transport of contaminants in air, water, soil, and ecosystems;
- Decontamination and decommissioning of structural materials;
- Health and safety risks from exposures;
- Impacts of alternative scenarios;
- Probabilistic models and uncertainty analyses;
- Optimizing sample collection and analysis methods;
- Developing integrated systems for wireless, GIS, and simulation tools; and
- Adapting tools to new applications, such as homeland security.
The extensive requirements of these developments are also accelerating the trend for increased collaboration to share tools with other scientific, academic, and consulting groups, both within and outside of Argonne.
