Munitions Demilitarization, Maintenance, and Supply Sources
EVS manages the development and technical support for computer programs and Web sites that are utilized to maintain and make available critical U.S. Department of Defense munitions data. Accurate information on the structure and material composition of munitions and their substructures is vital for recovery and recycling of valuable materials from deteriorated, obsolete, or excess munitions designated for disposition. Such information is also essential for properly assessing potential environmental and health impacts that may result from disposition of such munitions. To secure maximum possible storage space at a minimal cost from the munitions disposition, careful planning is required in awarding demilitarization contracts to government and civilian facilities. Additional planning is needed to manage the Army's efforts to recondition munitions components and parts that have become deteriorated. Viable components and parts of the munitions in the demilitarization inventory can be valuable supply sources for manufacturing new or reconditioning existing munitions. To assist in achieving these munitions management objectives, the computer programs and Web sites supported by EVS (in conjunction with technical input from Argonne's Decision and Information Sciences Division) are designed to facilitate (1) development, storage, search, retrieval, and analysis of munitions structure and composition data; (2) planning for the disposition and maintenance of munitions in the demilitarization inventory; and (3) collection, storage, search, retrieval and analysis of information on vendors and their capabilities to supply bulk materials and finished items such as individual parts, substructures, and complete munitions.
