Environmental Health Risk Section
The activities of the Environmental Health Risk Section cover a variety of risk science and policy topics, with the primary goal of supporting credible, cost-effective, risk-based decisions. A major focus of the Section involves applying state-of-the-art methods to estimate human health risks associated with a broad range of chemicals and processes. Multimedia and multipathway risk analyses are conducted to address a variety of contaminant sources, fate and transport pathways, human exposures, radioactive and chemical toxicities, and carcinogenic and noncarcinogenic risks. Section risk analysts also assess occupational safety issues associated with routine and accident conditions, as well as site characterization and engineering measures that can be applied to address contaminated sites and facilities and minimize projected health and environmental impacts.
Section personnel have training in toxicology, environmental engineering, environmental health sciences, epidemiology, public health, environmental chemistry, health physics, and computer science. Key areas of responsibility and research interests include:
- Analysis of contaminant fate and transport, exposures, and toxicities;
- Evaluation of health and safety risks for the public and workers;
- Assessment of cumulative risks and mitigation measures;
- Evaluation of integrated chemical, physical, and biological data;
- Assessment of acute and short-term exposures from specific chemical release events;
- Toxicological evaluation of unique chemicals and complex mixtures;
- Optimization of characterization/sampling plans;
- Risk management and environmental decision making;
- Community-based risk analyses and stakeholder participation;
- Risk communication and training;
- Internet applications for risk information; and
- Environmental data management for risk-based decision making.
